Connecticut arrest made in deadly 16th Street shooting of DC woman
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A week after a 27-year-old woman was found shot to death inside her Columbia Heights residence, a suspect was taken into custody Tuesday in Connecticut in connection with the killing, authorities said.
Officers responded Monday, February 2, at approximately 3:07 a.m. to a 911 hang-up call in the 3100 block of 16th Street Northwest. Inside the home, they located an adult female suffering from a gunshot wound.
DC Fire and EMS responded and determined there were no signs consistent with life. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
She was later identified as Nyesha Walden-Hatcher, 27, of Northwest, D.C.
On Tuesday, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, members of the Connecticut Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force arrested 35-year-old Tyjuan Bazemore in Middletown, Connecticut.
Bazemore will undergo the extradition process. Upon his return to Washington, D.C., he will be formally charged with second-degree murder while armed.
Authorities said they are coordinating with Connecticut officials as the case proceeds. The investigation remains ongoing.
The charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
