SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ – After Governor Phil Murphy’s pandemic eviction moratorium ended on December 31st, eviction caseloads across the state have been piling up. While many New Jersey families continue to struggle due two years of pandemic restrictions and lockdowns, others took advantage of the moratorium to stiff their landlords.
Statewide, 40,600 eviction cases have been filed in New Jersey courts since January 1st. That is more than twice the amount of filings the previous year.
Although New Jersey is now eviction cases to proceed, there is help for those who need it. New Jersey has distributed over $750 million in rental assistance during the pandemic, and the state is still promising another $500 million this year to qualified individuals.
Even though the pandemic is over, the lasting effects of Governor Phil Murphy’s 2020-2021 lockdowns are still visible.
