Youngstown, OH – A police officer was grazed by a bullet Friday evening in what the Youngstown Police Department is calling “a critical incident” on the city’s South Side.
The incident unfolded shortly after 8 p.m. when police were engaged in a pursuit that ended at the intersection of Firnley and Ravenwood avenues. During the confrontation, the suspect’s vehicle opened fire on officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. A bullet grazed one officer, resulting in superficial injuries. The officer is anticipated to make a full recovery.
Approximately 30 law enforcement agents were deployed to the scene, which led to the temporary closure of the area between Glenwood and Ravenwood avenues. The blockade was lifted around 10:30 p.m.
Youngstown police Capt. Jason Simon reported that the gunfire exchange occurred after the police chase, emphasizing the danger faced by the neighborhood response unit. Despite the tensions, Simon expressed relief over the officer’s condition, stating, “The officer is OK, and we thank God for that tonight.”
