Multi-Agency Traffic Safety Initiative Nets Over 90 Speeding Citations on Route 58

RICHMOND, VA – A concerted effort by Virginia State Troopers and local law enforcement has resulted in 96 drivers being cited for speeding along U.S. Route 58. The operation, dubbed the “Southern Virginia US58 Safety Initiative,” spanned from May 13 to May 17, covering a stretch of 116 miles from Emporia to Danville.

The initiative involved multiple agencies, including the South Hill Police Department, Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, and several other local sheriff’s offices and police departments. This enforcement action comes in response to increased traffic along Route 58, which is frequently used as a cross-state route.

According to 1/Sgt. S.C. Leslie, Virginia State Police Area 22 Commander, the high number of speeding citations underscores the ongoing need for strict traffic safety enforcement. In 2022, Virginia recorded 441 deaths in speed-related crashes, primarily on non-interstate highways. The initiative also led to 12 citations for seatbelt violations, one for a child restraint violation, and one DUI arrest, marking a significant effort to enhance road safety for all.
