Drunk Driver Slams Into Utility Pole After Wild Maryland Police Chase

May 17, 2026

LaVale, MD – A high-speed pursuit through Allegany County ended Friday afternoon when a fleeing driver crashed into a utility pole in LaVale after allegedly striking two police vehicles during the chase, according to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrested 27-year-old Gabriel William Nosek of Linden, Michigan, following the pursuit, which began around 4:28 p.m. on Mt. Savage Road near Corriganville.

Investigators said a sheriff’s deputy initially attempted to stop Nosek’s vehicle for a traffic-related incident, but the driver refused to pull over after emergency lights were activated and instead sped away at what officials described as a high rate of speed.

The chase continued through the LaVale area before ending on Illinois Avenue when the suspect vehicle slammed into a utility pole.

Authorities said Nosek also struck two police vehicles during the pursuit.

Despite the crashes and damage, no injuries were reported among deputies, bystanders, or the suspect.

Multiple Assault and DUI Charges Filed

Following the investigation, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office charged Nosek with:

  • Two counts of first-degree assault
  • Two counts of second-degree assault
  • Multiple DUI-related offenses
  • Numerous traffic violations and related charges

Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the attempted traffic stop or whether alcohol impairment was immediately apparent before the pursuit began.

First-degree assault charges in Maryland can carry significant prison penalties, particularly in cases involving alleged assaults on law enforcement officers during vehicle pursuits.

Pursuits Raise Safety Concerns

Friday’s chase unfolded across several communities in western Maryland before ending in LaVale, a busy commercial area near Cumberland.

Vehicle pursuits involving impaired driving suspects remain among the most dangerous incidents law enforcement officers face because of the risk to other motorists, pedestrians, and responding officers.

According to investigators, the pursuit ended only after the fleeing vehicle lost control and crashed into roadside infrastructure.

Damage to the utility pole and police vehicles was not immediately disclosed.
