SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY – The Suffolk County Police Department is advising residents to stay off the roads after 60 motor vehicle crashes have been reported and road conditions remain dangerous.

“Suffolk County is currently experiencing blizzard-like conditions and the Suffolk County Police Department is asking motorists to stay off the roads,” the department said. “We have responded to approximately 60 motor vehicle crashes since the start of the storm and Motor Carrier Safety Section officers have assisted several disabled motorists this morning.”

If you insist on traveling, do so at your own risk and be prepared.

“If you must be on the roads have an emergency kit available. For non-emergency situations, contact police by calling 631-852-COPS,” the department continued.

A blizzard warning remains in effect across the region until 7 pm tonight. Blizzard conditions exist throughout the county. Additional snow accumulations of 9 to 12 inches are expected with winds gusting as high as 55 mph.

The National Weather Service has also issued a coastal flood advisory for the county through midnight tonight.
