Burglars prowl Montgomery County as garage thief busted and lounge break-in suspect flees

Crime spree across Silver Spring and Wheaton included burglaries, stolen rims, and a parking garage arrest

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A string of burglaries, vehicle thefts, and property crimes swept across Montgomery County this week, with police responding to incidents ranging from apartment break-ins to stolen tires and a suspect caught inside a parking garage attempting to break into a vehicle.

According to the Montgomery County Police Department daily crime summary released Tuesday, officers investigated multiple incidents across the county tied to residential burglaries, commercial break-ins, and thefts from vehicles.

In the 5800 block of Nicholson Lane, officers responded Tuesday at about 9:40 a.m. after a vacant apartment unit showed signs that someone had been inside. No suspects were located at the scene.

Police also reported a commercial burglary Monday at about 8:50 p.m. at the Unique Thrift Store in the 10100 block of New Hampshire Avenue. Investigators said a suspect forced entry into a back office shortly before closing and stole property.

Another incident led to an arrest Tuesday around 11 a.m. near Fenton Street and Bonifant Street after a passing officer spotted a suspect breaking into a vehicle inside a parking garage. The suspect was arrested at the scene.

Investigators are also looking into a theft involving stolen tires and rims from a vehicle parked in the 7700 block of Blair Road. Police said the theft occurred sometime between Monday afternoon and Tuesday at noon.

Later Tuesday evening, officers responded to another commercial burglary at Mercury Lounge in the 9400 block of Georgia Avenue. Police said an employee encountered a suspect inside the business before the individual fled prior to officers arriving.

The incidents were included in the department’s May 19 daily crime summary. Police noted the report does not reflect all calls for service handled during the reporting period.
