Police are searching for a suspect who ripped a leash away and fled with a dog named Zen

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A dog owner out walking in Southeast Washington suddenly found themselves chasing after a fleeing suspect Tuesday evening after police said a man grabbed the leash of a dog named Zen and ran off with the animal.

The robbery happened at approximately 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of 14th and T Streets Southeast, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Investigators said the suspect approached the victim, snatched the dog’s leash, and fled on foot with the dog.

Police said the victim was not injured during the incident.

Authorities are now asking for the public’s help locating both the suspect and the stolen dog, identified as Zen.

MPD released photos of the dog as detectives continue investigating the unusual robbery.

Anyone with information about the incident or Zen’s whereabouts is urged to contact police at (202) 727-9099 or submit anonymous tips through the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by texting 50411.

The Metropolitan Police Department said a reward of up to $1,000 is available for information leading to the arrest and indictment of those responsible for crimes committed in the District of Columbia.
