National Guard troops stopped one suspect while another vanished into the DC night with the stolen ride

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A quiet Monday night on a busy Northwest corridor turned violent when a man sitting on his moped was suddenly attacked by two suspects, triggering a street confrontation that ended with one arrest, one suspect on the run, and National Guard members stepping into the chaos.

The attack happened at about 8:07 p.m. Monday in the 1900 block of 9th Street Northwest, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Investigators said the victim was sitting on his moped when two suspects approached him.

During the confrontation, one suspect allegedly began physically assaulting the victim while the second suspect took control of the victim’s moped and fled the area with the victim’s property.

As the fight unfolded on the street, members of the National Guard intervened and stopped the suspect accused of attacking the victim. The man was detained until MPD officers arrived at the scene.

Police identified the arrested suspect as 34-year-old Deangelo Williams of Northwest Washington. He was charged with unarmed carjacking.

Investigators said the second suspect remains unidentified and has not been located. The stolen moped was taken during the incident.

The investigation remains active as detectives continue working to identify and locate the second suspect involved in the robbery.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099 or submit anonymous tips to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411. MPD said a reward of up to $1,000 is available for information leading to an arrest and indictment in crimes committed in the District.
