New Castle, DE – A fatal pedestrian crash in New Castle is under investigation after a 63-year-old man died from injuries he suffered when he was struck by a pickup truck while using a wheelchair.
According to the Delaware State Police, the collision occurred at approximately 2:50 p.m. Monday on Christiana Road near the intersection with Pleasant Place. Investigators said a Nissan Titan was traveling westbound on Christiana Road as the pedestrian crossed within the marked crosswalk from Pleasant Place toward Scottie Lane.
Victim died from injuries Tuesday
The preliminary investigation found the Nissan had a green traffic signal when 63-year-old William Collins, of New Castle, entered the vehicle’s path and was struck. Collins was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said Collins died Tuesday as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash. The driver of the Nissan, a 39-year-old man from Newark, was not injured.
Investigation remains ongoing
The roadway was closed for approximately four hours while investigators processed the scene and cleared the roadway.
