GOSHEN, N.Y. — A Blooming Grove man with three prior DWI convictions was sentenced to 1.5 to 4.5 years in prison Thursday for driving while intoxicated and other related offenses, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced. James Cassidy, 51, was convicted after a six-day bench trial in Orange County Court.

The charges stem from an incident on July 12, 2023, when a deputy sheriff from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office encountered Cassidy at Clover Stables horse farm in New Windsor. The deputy was attempting to serve civil paperwork and spoke with Cassidy, who was driving onto the property. According to court documents, Cassidy showed signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking before driving from Montgomery.

Cassidy failed multiple field sobriety tests and refused a breath test. Authorities later determined that his license had been revoked due to previous DWI convictions.

District Attorney David M. Hoovler commended the sheriff’s office for their handling of the case. “The selfish decisions by drunk drivers imperil all of us who share our County’s roadways,” Hoovler said in a statement. “This repeat offender has shown no ability to curb his criminal actions despite increasing penalties.”

Cassidy was convicted of driving while intoxicated as a Class D felony and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the first degree. The district attorney’s office emphasized its commitment to prosecuting intoxicated and impaired driving cases.
