Wilmington man arrested on felony drug charges at new castle dui checkpoint

NEW CASTLE, DE – A 22-year-old Wilmington man was arrested after troopers discovered nearly half a kilogram of suspected marijuana and cash during a DUI checkpoint early Thursday morning.

Delaware State Police identified the driver as Wajahne Leggett, who was stopped at about 12:15 a.m. while passing through the checkpoint on Wilmington Road near Municipal Boulevard.

Troopers said they saw multiple small bags of suspected marijuana and cash in plain view inside a Toyota Camry.

A subsequent search turned up 481 grams of marijuana and $1,230 in suspected drug proceeds, according to investigators.

Suspect released on unsecured bond

Leggett was arrested and transported to the New Castle City Police Department for processing.

He was charged with felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and related offenses.

After arraignment by Justice of the Peace Court 11, Leggett was released on a $3,000 unsecured bond pending further court proceedings.

Checkpoint part of statewide safety effort

The DUI checkpoint was conducted by Delaware State Police in coordination with the Office of Highway Safety and local partner agencies as part of an ongoing effort to deter impaired driving.

Police said enforcement operations like these are designed to improve roadway safety and identify additional criminal activity encountered during stops.
