GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ – Mayor Mayer and Police Chief David Harkins announced the acquisition of two 2022 Police Interceptor Utility Hybrids for the Gloucester Township Police Department, marking a significant step in modernizing the force’s vehicle fleet.
Traditionally, police vehicles are idling 60% to 70% of the time to operate onboard systems. The new hybrids will keep the gasoline engine off for approximately 80% of idle time. Instead, a lithium-ion hybrid battery will power necessary equipment, maintaining a charge between 30% and 70%.
Compared to the previous model with a 3.7-liter gas engine, the new hybrid offers a 41% improvement in fuel efficiency, boasting an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined.
