TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, led by Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, and the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability, headed by Executive Director Thomas J. Eicher, are investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred in Manchester, New Jersey.
The incident took place on December 5, 2023, following a 9-1-1 call around 8:28 PM. Manchester Township Police Department officers responded to the call on Elizabeth Avenue. At approximately 9:10 PM, two officers fired their service weapons, resulting in the death of an adult male. The identity of the deceased has not been released. A firearm was found near the subject.
Under a 2019 law (P.L. 2019, c. 1), the Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate deaths occurring during an encounter with law enforcement or while in custody. The law mandates presenting all such cases to a grand jury to determine whether an indictment against the involved officers is warranted.
