WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Border Patrol recorded just 7,181 migrant encounters in March 2025, the lowest monthly total in more than 40 years, according to White House Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations Thomas D. Homan, who credited the sharp drop to immigration policies under former President Donald Trump’s leadership.
Homan, who now serves as the U.S. Border Czar, announced the figure in a social media post Tuesday, claiming the March total marks an unprecedented low in border activity since his start with the agency in 1984.
“Border Patrol encounters for the month of March was 7,181 total. I started as a Border Patrol Agent in 1984, which was 41 years ago. I cannot recall a single month since then that the numbers have been that low,” Homan stated.
The current figure represents a drastic decrease from the highs recorded under President Joe Biden’s administration, which saw migrant encounters surge to over 11,000 per day during peak periods.
Homan attributed the decline to what he called “game changing policies” reinstated or implemented under Trump, asserting that previous mass releases of migrants into the interior of the U.S. had encouraged further illegal crossings.
“The men and women of the Border Patrol have proven what they can accomplish when they are allowed to do their job and complete the mission of their agency,” he added.
Official Department of Homeland Security data has not yet been released to independently confirm the monthly figure cited by Homan.
