Prosecutors say a White Plains man was allegedly speeding at double the limit before the deadly crash
BRONX, N.Y. — A 21-year-old Westchester County man is accused of tearing down the Bronx River Parkway at 100 mph while intoxicated before crashing into two moped riders in a violent collision that killed both young men, prosecutors said.
Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced that Mauricio Neyra of White Plains was arraigned on multiple felony charges tied to the deadly August crash.
According to prosecutors, the collision happened around 1 a.m. on Aug. 11 near the Bronx River Parkway and East 223rd Street.
Investigators allege Neyra was driving a black 2019 Mercedes-Benz sedan when he struck two men traveling on mopeds along the parkway.
The victims were identified as 21-year-old Enrique Martinez and 19-year-old Manuel Amarante Penalo.
Both victims died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to prosecutors.
Authorities said data recovered from the Mercedes’ event data recorder, commonly known as a black box, showed the vehicle was traveling approximately 100 mph moments before impact.
The posted speed limit on that section of roadway is 50 mph.
Prosecutors also said a chemical test administered later that morning allegedly showed Neyra had a blood alcohol concentration of .08.
Neyra was arraigned on charges including aggravated vehicular homicide, first-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, and driving while ability impaired.
A judge set bail at $25,000 cash, $50,000 bond, or $50,000 partially secured bond.
Neyra is scheduled to return to court on July 22.
Bronx District Attorney Clark called the case an “egregious” act of recklessness and negligence that led to the deaths of two young men.
Officials noted the indictment is an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
