A federal immigration agent was reportedly struck by a fleeing vehicle and discharged a firearm during an attempted apprehension in Manahawkin, authorities said.
A federal immigration enforcement operation in Stafford Township led to a major police response Monday morning after a suspect allegedly struck an ICE agent with a vehicle and fled, prompting the agent to fire shots at the vehicle. Local police at the scene, under New Jersey law, said they were present in the aftermath to manage traffic and secure the scene.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. near Route 72 and Mermaid Drive in Manahawkin, according to the Stafford Township Police Department.
The agents were wearing facemasks, in violation of Governor Mikie Sherrill’s executive order barring federal agents from wear facial coverings.
Suspect fled after attempted apprehension
Police said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were attempting to apprehend a suspect when the individual fled the scene in a vehicle. During the escape, the vehicle reportedly struck an ICE agent.
Authorities said the agent then discharged a firearm at the fleeing vehicle, reportedly striking it. The suspect continued fleeing and had not been located as of Monday afternoon.
The extent of the agent’s injuries was not immediately known. Officials also said it remains unclear whether the suspect was injured.
Stafford police not involved in operation
The Stafford Township Police Department emphasized that it was not involved in the federal enforcement action. The agency said it adheres to New Jersey’s Attorney General Immigrant Trust Directive and did not assist with the ICE operation.
“Our role at this point is to manage traffic and secure the crime scene,” the department said in a statement.
Route 72 closures expected for several hours
The investigation remained active Monday, with portions of the area around Route 72 and Mermaid Drive affected by road closures. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes through the Ocean Acres section of Stafford Township.
Police said there is currently no reason to believe the incident poses a threat to public safety. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
