New Jersey Introduces Legislation to Aid Migrants and Refugees From Haiti Venezuela

TRENTON, NJ – New legislation, known as the “New Jersey Migrant and Refugee Assistance Act,” has been introduced by Assemblywoman Shanique Speight of District 29 and Assemblyman Reginald W. Atkins of District 20. This bill aims to provide substantial support to migrants and refugees residing in New Jersey by establishing a comprehensive assistance program within the Department of Human Services.

The “New Jersey Migrant and Refugee Assistance Act” is designed to aid a diverse population within the state, including many from nations experiencing significant turmoil such as Haiti, Venezuela, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The legislation seeks to facilitate access to essential services such as housing, healthcare, education, job training, and legal aid through a newly formed Migrant and Refugee Resource Coordination Program.

The Department of Human Services is tasked with developing an outreach campaign that will use various languages and media platforms to inform migrants and refugees about available public assistance programs. This initiative is set to enhance the integration and well-being of these communities across New Jersey.

Additionally, the department is required to submit an annual report to the Governor and Legislature detailing the program’s effectiveness, the assistance provided, and any proposed improvements, ensuring continuous support and adaptation to the needs of migrants and refugees in the state.
