BRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Marciano Sanchez, a fugitive wanted in connection with a 2010 attempted murder in Brick Township, has been captured in New York City, authorities announced Thursday. Sanchez, 40, whose last known address was in Queens, New York, was apprehended on October 2 by the New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit and the U.S. Marshals Service Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Sanchez, who had been on New Jersey’s Most Wanted list for nearly 14 years, is currently being held at Rikers Island, awaiting extradition to Ocean County, New Jersey, where he faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
The charges stem from a November 29, 2010, incident in which Brick Township police officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim at the Community First Aid Building on Mantoloking Road. Officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the face. The victim was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, treated, and later released. A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and other local agencies identified Sanchez as the shooter.
“After nearly 14 years, Marciano Sanchez has, at long last, been captured and will be returned to Ocean County to face justice,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a statement, thanking law enforcement agencies for their efforts.
Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, emphasized the importance of collaboration in capturing fugitives. “No matter how long it takes or how far they run, we will find and bring to justice those who threaten the safety of our communities,” Callahan said.
Sanchez was charged on December 21, 2010, and a warrant for his arrest was issued shortly after. His name was also entered into the National Crime Information Center database.
The apprehension was the result of a joint effort by local, state, and federal agencies, including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Brick Township Police Department, New Jersey State Police, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
Sanchez is expected to be extradited to New Jersey in the coming days to face the charges.
