TRENTON, N.J. — Major Jeffrey A. Burke, a 26-year veteran of the New Jersey State Police, passed away on Tuesday due to a 9/11-related illness contracted while serving in response to the World Trade Center attacks, the agency announced.

Major Burke, 53, served as the Commanding Officer of the Intelligence and Criminal Enterprise Section and was a member of the 118th State Police Class. Throughout his career, he worked in the Operations and Investigations Branches, earning respect and distinction for his service.

Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, expressed condolences on behalf of the department. “It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely death of Major Jeffrey A. Burke,” Callahan said. “Please join us in praying for Jeff and his family as we mourn his loss.”

Burke’s illness was attributed to his time responding to the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, part of the enduring legacy of health impacts on first responders who worked at Ground Zero. His death is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by those who answered the call during one of the nation’s darkest hours.

Major Burke leaves behind a legacy of dedication and service. The department has not yet released details regarding funeral arrangements.
