Faced with the choice of opening a fresh pack for another attempt, he initially doubted whether the first ticket in a new roll could be a winner.
Instead of leaving, he chose to take the chance, purchasing the first ticket from the newly opened pack. That ticket revealed a $50,000 third-tier prize, surprising both the player and the store clerk at the counter.
Close call leads to biggest personal win
The retired CEO said the win marked his largest lottery prize to date, surpassing a previous $2,500 Pick 4 win. Despite years of playing, the outcome hinged on a single decision to continue after a loss.
