Ocean County Parks to Offer Six Week Program on Chronic Disease Management

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a six-week course aimed at empowering individuals with chronic diseases to manage symptoms like fatigue and depression, and make healthier lifestyle choices.

The program will commence on October 2 and will run every Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ocean County Parks and Recreation Administration Building, located at 1198 Bandon Road. Designed by Stanford University, the local sponsor is Community Services Inc., which also operates the Ocean County Meals on Wheels program.

Though the program itself is free, there is a nominal $5 registration fee per participant. The course will cover various aspects including symptom management, relaxation techniques, balanced nutrition, and effective medication use. Additional aspects such as improving communication skills, problem-solving, and goal-setting will also be covered.

Ocean County Commissioner Virginia E. Haines, who serves as Chairwoman of the Ocean County Parks and Recreation Department, expressed optimism about the program. “The course offers comprehensive information beneficial to anyone living with chronic disease and aims to increase self-confidence in managing one’s health,” she said.

Registration is open and can be done in person at Jakes Branch County Park, Wells Mills County Park, or the Ocean County Parks Administration Building. Alternatively, residents can register by phone by calling 732-506-9090.

Director of the Ocean County Board of Commissioners Joseph H. Vicari emphasized the county’s commitment to the health of its residents. “With a significant senior population, our goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle through programs that equip individuals with essential skills for wellbeing,” he said.
