Mayfield Heights, OH – A rescheduled doctor’s appointment turned into a million-dollar twist of fate for an Ohio Lottery player who walked into a Cleveland gas station one day early—and walked out with a $1 million winning VIP Millions scratch-off ticket.

The ticket was purchased at 55th Saint Clair Shell at 5505 St. Clair Avenue in Cleveland. The winner, whose name has not been released, chose the cash option and will receive $500,000 before taxes. After mandatory state and federal withholding totaling 27.125%, the final payout amounts to $364,375.

The ticket was part of the Ohio Lottery’s VIP Millions $50 scratch-off game, which offers some of the best odds in state history for hitting a million-dollar jackpot. The odds of winning any prize in the game are 1 in 4.02. As of Tuesday, there are still 11 top prizes and 21 second-tier prizes remaining.

The unexpected win occurred after the man’s medical appointment was bumped up, giving him time to visit the gas station a day earlier than planned. That spontaneous stop turned out to be worth six figures.

The VIP Millions game is part of a broader portfolio that has helped contribute more than $34 billion to Ohio education since the state lottery began in 1974.
