SILVER SPRING, MD – A Maryland teen, Emmanuel L. Simmonds, has been sentenced to life in prison, with all but 35 years suspended, for the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old at a Metro station in May 2023. The sentencing took place on Friday, as announced by Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy.
Simmonds was 16 years old at the time of the incident, which occurred during rush hour on May 18, 2023, at the Wheaton Station in Silver Spring. According to reports, a conflict erupted between two groups of teens, leading to a violent altercation. During the confrontation, Simmonds produced a firearm and shot Tenneson Leslie, who was attempting to flee, in the back of the head.
The shooting caused panic among commuters, and Simmonds fled the scene by boarding a nearby train. He later passed the weapon to a 14-year-old accomplice, who discarded it on the train. Leslie was found by first responders on the platform and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Surveillance footage capturing Simmonds in a hooded sweatshirt helped authorities identify and apprehend him approximately a week later. The case has concluded with Simmonds’ sentencing, marking a tragic resolution to the deadly dispute.
