Ukrainian woman stabbed to death in random Charlotte light rail attack

Charlotte, NC – A 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who fled war for safety in the United States was fatally stabbed in the throat during a random attack on a Charlotte light rail train, police said.

The victim, identified as Iryna Zarutska, had arrived in the U.S. seeking a new start after escaping Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Her life was cut short Friday when authorities say 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., a repeat offender with a lengthy criminal record, launched an unprovoked assault.

Surveillance video released by authorities shows the brutal attack unfolding as riders looked on in shock. Police said Zarutska died from her injuries at the scene.

Brown, who has spent much of the past 15 years cycling in and out of prison, was taken into custody and charged with murder. Records show he has prior convictions for violent offenses.

The random killing has sparked outrage and grief, with local officials acknowledging Zarutska’s death as both a personal tragedy and a devastating blow to a community that had welcomed her as she sought refuge from war.
