WESTFIELD, N.J. – A trip to Mindowaskin Park turned into an unusual rescue Wednesday morning when a child’s head became stuck between concrete columns, bringing police, firefighters and EMS to the park.
The 911 call reached the Westfield Communications Center at about 11:30 a.m. Officer Pollock responded, while Lt. Maloney walked over from nearby police headquarters to help.
The officers found the child trapped between the columns and climbed over a railing onto a ledge to reach the youngster.
Officers Climb Onto Ledge for Rescue
From the ledge, Pollock and Maloney were able to position themselves around the child and carefully work to free the youngster.
The Westfield Fire Department and EMS had also been dispatched, giving police additional help at the scene if it was needed.
The rescue ended without an injury. Police did not say how the child’s head became lodged between the columns or how long the child had been stuck before someone called 911.
The department credited its officers, firefighters and communications personnel for getting the child out safely.
