POINT PLEASANT, N.J. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that bulkhead repairs at the mouth of the Point Pleasant Canal in Ocean County began in December 2023, targeting severely deteriorated steel structures along the canal’s eastern shoreline.
The $3.2 million project, awarded to UH Services Group, LLC of Metairie, Louisiana, is funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and will address erosion and stability issues at the Manasquan River entrance of the canal.
The work includes demolition and removal of existing bulkhead structures, installation of new steel sheet piling and associated materials, placement of backfill stone, and installation of riprap in the water to reinforce the shoreline. Diving operations began December 7, with other construction efforts proceeding in phases.
The Point Pleasant Canal is part of the 117-mile New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway, a key navigation route supporting commercial fishing and the U.S. Coast Guard. The waterway connects the Manasquan River to the Delaware Bay via the Cape May Canal.
The repairs aim to restore critical infrastructure supporting marine traffic and shoreline protection in a heavily used section of New Jersey’s coastal waterway system.
