Newark, NJ – U.S. Sen. Cory Booker is facing criticism after blaming President Donald Trump’s public health policies for the nation’s ongoing Cyclospora outbreak, a claim that public health experts and fact-checkers say goes beyond the available evidence.
In a social media post, Booker wrote:
“Trump’s reckless cuts to public health have left us exposed—and now we’re facing the largest Cyclospora outbreak on record, with thousands of cases across the country.”
He continued:
“He gutted surveillance, fired the experts who track these parasites, and slashed the very systems meant to protect American families. We must restore these protections and hold this administration accountable.”
Record outbreak is real, but cause remains linked to contaminated produce
Federal health officials report the United States is experiencing what appears to be the largest recorded Cyclospora outbreak in the country’s history.
As of this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported more than 4,100 laboratory-confirmed cases across 41 states since May 1, with thousands of additional suspected cases still under investigation. A large share of illnesses has been epidemiologically linked by the Food and Drug Administration to contaminated iceberg lettuce supplied to Taco Bell restaurants, with the lettuce traced to Mexico.
Investigators continue working to identify the full scope of the outbreak and any additional sources.
Experts dispute implied connection to surveillance cuts
Booker’s criticism comes after reports that the Trump administration reduced portions of the CDC’s Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, known as FoodNet, and that staffing declined in the CDC laboratory specializing in Cyclospora and related parasites.
Public reporting indicates those reductions occurred. However, multiple food safety experts told independent watchdog FactCheck.org that the FoodNet changes are different from the surveillance systems used to detect outbreaks such as the current one.
FactCheck.org concluded that while reductions in staffing and funding may have affected longer-term surveillance and aspects of the government’s response, “the surveillance that ended is different from the system used to detect outbreaks.”
The publication also reported that experts said the FoodNet changes were “unlikely to have played much of a direct role in the current outbreak.”
Some claims supported, others remain unproven
Booker’s statement combines documented facts with broader political conclusions.
Available evidence supports that the outbreak is historically large and that portions of CDC surveillance and specialized staffing were reduced under the Trump administration. Reports indicate the Cyclospora laboratory’s staffing declined significantly, although the laboratory continues operating.
However, public evidence does not establish that those staffing reductions caused the outbreak itself or would have even prevented the outbreak. It doesn’t even suggest the outbreak could have been mitigated in any way had those cuts not been made.
Federal investigators continue to attribute the illnesses to contaminated produce rather than changes in surveillance programs.
Similarly, descriptions that Trump “gutted surveillance” or “fired the experts who track these parasites” simplify a more nuanced situation. Surveillance programs were reduced rather than eliminated, and staffing losses resulted from a combination of workforce reductions and departures rather than the wholesale elimination of the program.
Public health response continues
The FDA and CDC continue investigating the outbreak while monitoring additional reported illnesses nationwide. Taylor Farms has voluntarily recalled certain iceberg lettuce products after epidemiological evidence linked them to many of the reported cases, although the investigation remains ongoing.
While Democrats have argued that reductions in public health infrastructure weakened the nation’s preparedness, current public reporting has not established a direct causal connection between those changes and the contamination event that triggered the outbreak.
