Trenton, NJ – A Sussex County man has been convicted of attempting to sexually assault someone he believed was a 14-year-old after being caught in an undercover sting operation.
Larry M. Noel, 49, of Stanhope, was found guilty of luring, attempted sexual assault, and attempted endangering the welfare of a child following a trial in Bergen County Superior Court before Judge Christopher R. Kazlau.
Authorities said Noel arranged to meet with a person he believed to be a minor after explicit online communications, but the individual was actually an undercover officer.
Attorney General announces conviction
Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced the conviction, crediting the coordinated efforts of the Division of Criminal Justice, the New Jersey State Police, and local law enforcement for removing a dangerous offender from the community. Platkin said operations like this are vital to protecting children and holding predators accountable.
DCJ Director Theresa L. Hilton emphasized the growing dangers posed by online platforms, noting that the internet’s anonymity has made it easier for offenders to target minors. She said Noel’s conviction demonstrates law enforcement’s continued resolve to pursue those who seek to exploit children.
Operation Home Alone nets another conviction
The investigation stemmed from “Operation Home Alone,” a statewide initiative targeting online child exploitation. On April 11, 2019, Noel began communicating on a social media app with an undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old. He misrepresented himself as a 29-year-old and discussed engaging in sexual acts before arranging to meet in Bergen County, where he was taken into custody upon arrival.
Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, said the case sends a clear message that anyone attempting to harm or endanger a child will face severe consequences.
Multi-agency effort targets online predators
The operation was coordinated through the New Jersey Regional Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, a statewide network that includes members of the State Police, Division of Criminal Justice, and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, along with numerous local and federal partners.
Deputy Attorneys General John Donovan and Danielle handled the prosecution for the Division of Criminal Justice.
