Akron officer honored after saving choking worker with heimlich maneuver

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Police Department has recognized Officer Amber Lowe as its June Officer of the Month after she rescued a choking worker during a medical emergency outside a local business.

According to the department, the incident occurred on June 30 when Lowe pulled into the parking lot of Ken Stewart’s Grille. As she exited her vehicle, an employee from the nearby Take 5 Oil Change flagged her down and reported that a co-worker was actively choking.

Quick response prevented tragedy

Recognizing the medical emergency, Lowe immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver. Police said the maneuver successfully dislodged the obstruction and cleared the victim’s airway before emergency medical personnel arrived.

“The swift application of aid undoubtedly saved the person’s life,” the Akron Police Department said in announcing the award. “Her quick thinking and the proper application of her training were crucial in resolving the situation with the best possible outcome.”

Department recognizes lifesaving actions

The department said Lowe’s actions exemplify its mission and core values, citing her continued commitment to serving the community.

“Her commitment and dedication to the city of Akron, its citizens, and the Akron Police Department’s mission and core values, are not without notice as she continues to serve daily; and for this, she is being recognized for outstanding work,” the department said.
