Sherrill slams GOP-backed budget in heated social media thread as governor’s race heats up

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill launched a pointed series of attacks on a Republican-backed federal budget proposal Tuesday, calling it a “reckless” plan that would raise taxes and healthcare costs for New Jersey residents while benefitting top earners.

In a 10-post thread on X, the Democratic congresswoman—who is running for governor in 2025—claimed the bill, in combination with tariffs supported by former President Donald Trump, would cost median New Jersey families $1,250 per year, strip health coverage from over 400,000 residents, and double premiums for hundreds of thousands more.

“450,000 New Jerseyans will see their healthcare premiums DOUBLE,” Sherrill wrote, “increasing costs by $4,200/year for a family of four.”

She further stated that the bill would impact food assistance for 185,000 residents and increase energy costs by $240 annually by the end of the decade. Citing a rollback of the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap, Sherrill claimed New Jerseyans would face over $30 billion in additional taxes under the proposal.

The thread repeatedly targeted Jack Ciattarelli, the likely Republican frontrunner in the upcoming gubernatorial race, referring to the legislation as the “Trump-Ciattarelli agenda.” Ciattarelli has not publicly responded to the thread.

“This bill will raise your taxes, raise your utility costs, raise your healthcare costs, and quite literally take food out of the mouths of hungry children,” Sherrill wrote.

Sherrill concluded by pledging to vote against the bill and framing her platform as a contrast to GOP leadership. Her campaign has centered on economic relief for middle-class families and rolling back Trump-era tax policies.
