A 16-year-old Hyattsville resident was fatally shot in Brentwood, and Prince George’s County homicide detectives say the killing does not appear to have been random.
A teenage boy was found shot to death Friday afternoon in the Town of Brentwood, prompting an active homicide investigation by the Prince George’s County Police Department. The victim was identified as 16-year-old Ruben Arevalo Saavedra of Hyattsville.
Officers responded at approximately 4:55 p.m. to the 3700 block of Shepherd Street after receiving reports of a shooting.
Teen Pronounced Dead at Scene
When officers arrived, they found Arevalo Saavedra outside suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit has since taken over the investigation.
“Officers located the victim outside suffering from a gunshot(s) wound. He died at the scene,” police said in a statement.
Detectives Say Shooting Was Not Random
Investigators are working to identify the person or persons responsible and determine what led to the deadly shooting.
“Preliminarily, detectives do not believe this was a random crime,” the department said.
Authorities have not released information regarding a possible suspect, motive, or circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Search for Answers Continues
Detectives are urging anyone with information about the homicide to come forward as the investigation remains active.
“Detectives are actively working to identify a suspect(s) and determine a motive,” police said.
The Prince George’s County Police Department investigates all homicides that occur within the Town of Brentwood.
