COLTS NECK, NJ — In a joint statement issued today, Steve Dnistrian, a candidate for NJ State Senate, and Assemblywomen Marilyn Piperno and Kim Eulner of New Jersey’s 11th Legislative District, called for accountability following a scathing investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) into the neglect of veterans in state-run nursing homes during and after the pandemic.

The DOJ report revealed a disturbing pattern of neglect that led to at least 200 veteran deaths and ongoing suffering in these facilities. Dnistrian, Piperno, and Eulner assert that both Governor Murphy and Senator Vin Gopal failed to protect veterans when they needed help the most.

The statement emphasized the need for accountability at all levels of leadership, including within the Murphy administration, the state legislature, and the nursing home facilities themselves.

The trio of lawmakers called for those responsible to be held accountable for the tragic consequences of their failures.

Senator Vin Gopal, who chaired the Senate Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee at the time, faced criticism for failing to use his oversight authority to investigate the veteran deaths. When Senator Nia Gil requested investigations with full subpoena power, Gopal refused to initiate them. He also declined to support bipartisan efforts to improve the living conditions in these facilities. According to Dnistrian, Piperno, and Eulner, Gopal repeatedly turned his back on veterans during their time of need and now deflects blame onto the administration.

The lawmakers concluded their statement by raising the question of accountability, comparing the situation to the “Bridgegate” scandal. They argued that those entrusted with protecting veterans and their families have failed to do so and should face consequences. If accountability is not achieved in Trenton, the voters will have the opportunity to elect individuals who will prioritize justice for veterans and their families.

The 11th Legislative District, which includes various municipalities such as Colts Neck, Long Branch, Red Bank, and Freehold, has been identified by national Republicans as one of the state’s most competitive races in the upcoming November elections. The focus on accountability in the wake of the DOJ report is likely to be a central issue in this closely watched contest.
