Indictment vs. Indictment: A reading lesson for Toms River Democrat Terrance Turnbach

Toms River, NJ – Democrat Toms River Councilman Terrance Turnbach has dreams of one day being a sitting judge in New Jersey, but a lawsuit in New Jersey Superior Court could derail those dreams if he and other council members are found guilty of breaking the township’s pay to play ordinance when they hired New Jersey Assemblyman Gregory P. McGuckin to a contract worth an estimated $500,000 per year.

Turnbach and other members of the council were indicted by Councilman Daniel Rodrick for colluding with each other to award McGuckin a no-bid contract that violated the township pay to play ordinance.

Let’s pause this story right here because Democrat Turnbach has an issue with the word indictment.  So let’s break it down, because he may have been practicing law a little bit too long.

Indictment verb (used with object)

1. (of a grand jury) to bring a formal accusation against, as a means of bringing to trial: The grand jury indicted him for murder.
2. to charge with an offense or crime; accuse of wrongdoing; castigate; criticize: He tends to indict everyone of plotting against him.

So Terrance quit your whining, and stop doing the whole, “Depends on what the definition of is, is.” routine. That’s not what’s important.
Let’s break it down more.

If say, you write bad checks, it’s a minor crime and you are ‘charged’ with it, not indicted by a court of law, but it is also an indictment against you.

Say you commit, murder, you are indicted by a grand jury.  If somebody files a charge against you, you have been indicted by that person.  That crazy English language and words that have multiple meanings, even if they are pretty darn close.

Back to the story.
Turnbach voted for McGuckin’s contract, despite always abstaining for bills and claims made payable to McGuckin. That’s the end of this story, because we just wanted inform Turnbach of the English language.    Dan Rodrick indicted Turnbach and the rest of the council.  Never was did SNN report that he was indicted by a Grand Jury…at least not yet.

There really was no story here.
