New jersey cops say don't call 911 after earthquake unless you have an emergency

FREEHOLD, NJ—After a 4.8 earthquake shook New Jersey, thousands of people are calling 911 across the state. Officials in Monmouth County and other jurisdictions are reporting that emergency lines are flooded with calls about the earthquake.

Officials have confirmed the earthquake and request that unless you have an emergency, please do not call 911 to report the earthquake. The lines are being tied up and could lead to delays if a real emergency call is missed due to volume.

“All operations at the #MCSONJ are running effectively after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake has shaken NJ &beyond,” said Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden. “Reports that the MCSO’s 911 Communications Center is dealing with an influx of calls as a result. Pls only dial 9-1-1 if you are experiencing an emergency.”
