Andy Kim, the favorite candidate in this year’s election to replace Menendez, issued a statement today.

Upon the initial public charges, Kim had already requested Menendez’s resignation. With the conviction now confirmed, he insists that the only appropriate action for Menendez is to resign immediately. “The people of New Jersey deserve better,” Kim stated, reflecting his concern for the integrity of public office.
Menendez has said he is going to run for re-election as an independent prior to his conviction.
In the event that Menendez resigns, Phil Murphy will pick his temporary successor. Kim waged a fierce political campaign against Murphy’s wife, Tammy, in the Democrat primary election. It is unclear whether Murphy will choose Kim to replace Menendez.
